Pineapple Silk, also known as Piña Silk or Piña Seda is a well-known Philippine textile which existed since the Spanish colonial times (circa 1500s). The textile was known to have been perfected between the late 18th century to the first half of the 19th century. This traditional textile is delicately handwoven by the most skilled weavers of Aklan. It is made from silk yarns produced in Negros and hand-scraped pineapple fibers (leaves from the native red variety or Ananas Bracteatus) from Aklan.

Pineapple Silk is considered the "Queen of Philippine Textiles" and has always been the preferred fabric of the elite. Authentic Philippine formal attires such as the intricately embroidered Barong Tagalog and the Philippine Kimona are made using Pineapple Silk.

Our Pineapple Silk is lightweight, translucent and slightly crisp to the touch like organza. It can be easily manipulated to create structured and airy designs. Because it uses natural silk yarns and pineapple fibers, it is breathable and cool to the skin. This is an ideal material for embroidery because of its open weaves. It is also very receptive to natural dyes.

Care & Washing Instructions:

Pineapple silk is considered an heirloom textile handed from one generation to another. Keep it in mint condition by doing the following:

  • Gently hand wash in cool or lukewarm water. Use only diluted mild liquid detergent or hand soap. Lightly agitate for three to five minutes and rinse well. Avoid soaking for more than 5 minutes. DO NOT machine wash. DO NOT bleach.
  • DO NOT Wring. Hang or put on a clean flat surface or towel to dry. Roll out in a clean, absorbent towel to remove excess moisture. Air drying is still the best. Keep away from direct sunlight or heat source.
  • Press or iron using the lowest or silk setting while the fabric is still damp. Spray with a little water before ironing if the fabric is dry. Use a cotton-covered ironing board. DO NOT USE steam to avoid unnecessary stains.
  • Store in a cool and dry place where air circulates. For long-term storage, wrap the fabric with acid-free tissue paper or cover with cotton fabric to protect it from moisture that causes stains. Use cedar chips or moth balls to keep bugs away.
