Philippine Heritage Textiles, Woven Forward

Manila Designer was founded in 2016 by Jean, a fashion designer who set out to source authentic Philippine heritage textiles for her own collections — and discovered how limited access truly was.

At the time, finding handwoven Philippine textiles required traveling to weaving communities, visiting museums, speaking with experts, and building relationships firsthand. Information was scarce. Documentation was fragmented. The materials existed, but access to these artisan-made fabrics was not centralized or easily available to contemporary designers.

Through this process, Jean developed an intimate understanding of Philippine textiles — how they are handwoven, how natural fibers behave, how traditional techniques shape structure, and the cultural meaning these materials carry.

Manila Designer was created to make Philippine heritage and handwoven textiles more accessible to designers locally and internationally, without removing them from their origin or cultural context.

The platform works directly with Filipino weaving communities, supporting the continued visibility and availability of their sustainable, artisan-made textiles. It does not industrialize craft or commission mass production. Instead, it offers carefully selected handwoven fabrics — many created from natural fibers using ancestral weaving techniques passed down through generations.

Among the most revered is Philippine Pineapple Silk (Piña Seda), a handwoven textile from Aklan made with hand-scraped pineapple fiber and natural silk. Lightweight yet structured, translucent yet resilient, it has long been considered the Queen of Philippine Textiles and remains one of the country’s most distinguished heritage fabrics.

Beyond access, Manila Designer provides technical clarity and cultural context, helping slow fashion and responsible design brands work with handwoven textiles thoughtfully and with respect.

Growth is never pursued at the expense of tradition.
Heritage is not treated as aesthetic — but as living practice.

Manila Designer exists to stand between artisan and designer, ensuring that Philippine handwoven textiles are not only preserved, but continued.

To weave it forward.
